Polk County residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic equipment for no additional cost during a collection event hosted by Polk County’s Waste & Recycling Division and the City of Haines City. The collection will take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 8 at the Public Works Utility Complex, 300 N. 5th Street in Haines City.
Household hazardous materials accepted during the event include: cleaners, polishes, solvents, automotive products, aerosol cans, insecticides, disinfectants, paint products, batteries and pool chemicals. Residents can drop off up to five electronic items per household. Electronic materials accepted include: computers, monitors, keyboards, terminals, televisions, stereos, printers, fax machines, VCR/DVD players, video cameras and video game consoles.
Polk County also operates a drop-off facility for these materials at the North Central Landfill located between Lakeland and Winter Haven on Highway 540 (Winter Lake Road). It is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays (except Wednesday) and 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturdays.
Business waste will not be accepted. Businesses may call Polk County’s Waste Resource Management Division at (863) 284-4319 to learn proper disposal procedures.
